Circle X was founded in 1996 by seven artists drawn together by a common dream of creating an artistic home for a vibrant new American Theater. In six years we have grown to well over 50 members and established ourselves as one of the most artistically substantive theatre companies in Southern California. We are committed to engaging and impacting the community in which we serve. Since our inception, the company has manifested that commitment in a variety of different ways. As a theatrical ensemble, Circle X mounts productions that excite and challenge, creating art that interests and invests the audience. This emphasis on daring and provocative theatre has been critically recognized as we have produced 19 full-scale productions receiving four Ovation Awards from 17 nominations, seven L.A. Weekly Awards from 28 nominations and four L.A. Drama Critics’ Circle Awards from 10 nominations. We have also won 10 Garland Awards and two Ted Schmitt Awards from the L.A. Drama Critics’ Circle. In addition to our theatrical offerings, Circle X is committed to maintaining a vital bond with the surrounding community. Each of our productions, social engagements and fundraising events has an affiliation with a local charity. Since our inception, we have taught weekly workshops at the Los Angeles Youth Network (LAYN), an organization that provides a safe haven for runaway teens in Hollywood. Circle X was also instrumental in forming “Big Cheap Theatre” (BCT), an alliance between ever-evolving groups of independent theatre companies in Southern California dedicated to sharing resources, information, and support. The successful execution of our mission statement has not gone unnoticed. We’ve been chosen as a recipient of funding by the Flintridge Foundation, the California Arts Council, the LA County Arts Commission, and the City of LA Cultural Affairs Department. While we’re honored by these accolades and appreciate the recognition of our work, it is not for awards that we set out to produce live theatre. Our artistic process is the challenge and the bond that drives the company. Our emphasis on innovation goes beyond selection of thought-provoking, highly theatrical plays, reaching into everything from production design, performance, direction, administration and marketing of productions, thus creating the aesthetic for which we are known. In the years to come we look forward to continuing our high theatrical and community ideals as well as the evolution as an organization that challenges and champions the community it serves. MISSION STATEMENT: Circle X is a not-for-profit, ensemble theater company dedicated to highly provocative and boldly theatrical productions of new and rarely seen plays. We believe in imagination over budget, adrenaline over inertia, and excellence over all. Through our art and action, we help cultivate a better community.
